Finding His Style

In 1840, Claude Monet was born in Paris, France. After his art education at Académie Suisse, Monet studied with artist Eugene Boudin. During this time, he developed a style based on light and color and learned to paint en plein air (outdoors).

Monet Struggles

Monet struggled with depression and self-doubt, attempting suicide in 1868. In 1870, Monet married Camille Doncieux, one of his models. They suffered financial hardship and in 1879 Camille died. Monet married Alice Hodsche in 1892. They moved to Giverny, a French commune, where Monet created most of his art.
